The Dedication of the new Amarillo cathedral

It was one thing seeing pictures of it empty. But to watch the dedication ceremony is something else. There are lots of notable features, but for the Pimpernel the singing of the Gospel is stands out as truly exceptional . Enjoy.

  1. Someone should have told the bishop the danger of giving directions when wearing a mike. They're great!

  2. The way he handles the Sacred Hosts before Holy Communion is truly scandalous. The whole thing is so slapdash and casual it's irreverent. Patrick C

  3. Magnificent! What a beautiful and moving liturgy. Thank God for our beloved Holy Father and his 'brick by brick' restoration of liturgical worhship.

  4. Oh dear. The cardinal's 'homily' is a classic - 'let's celebrate us folks' seems to be the key theme running through it. Thank God for Pope Benedict XVI. Fr. A.

  5. Eh, par for the course for the Ordinary Form "Solemn Mass", at least for the USA.

What the heck was going on during the gradual? The love child of an out-of-tune fiddle and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir? huh? That was the only bit I didn't get. The mix of mariachi, folk Mass, chanted Agnus Dei, and the bizarre gradual is all to be expected. It's important that every "music ministry" is represented out of sensitivity, even if the resulting mix is quite strange.

There are great English adaptations of the Liber Usualis settings (e.g. CMAA composers). Why not use one of those settings for the entire Mass? Roman patrimony with some modern compromises. However, I don't know if there's a Spanish adaptation of a Liber Mass. If there isn't, a vernacular Mass based on traditional plainsong is a no-go.

The good bishop should at least let the Tridentine faithful hear a missa cantata in the Cathedral. Something tells me he doesn't want to rock the boat right now -- hence the "all things to nobody" Mass.
