God in a bag, or street worship of the Blessed Sacrament.

On 2nd June, two Franciscan Capuchins held a Eucharistic Adoration Flash Mob in front of a busy mall in Preston, UK. They read out a powerful list of Jesus's atttributes in each book of the Bible and then call passers-by to "Come and Kneel Before Him Now". And slowly, one by one, they do. Then they begin to clap before him. If you have not seen this, prepare yourself.

There's lots of stuff to say about what these Capuchins did, and perhaps the local bishop has already said it. If he hasn't, then he should now.

  1. Dear Pimpernel, You are being much too grumpy. The Capuchins are just living up to their mandate.

  2. There was nothing at all irreverent or profane about the adoration. I was very happy to see so many kneeling in adoration before the Lord.

So, the Capuchin wasn't wearing choir dress and did not have a humeral veil. He did not sing the Benediction hymns either. For the setting, his attire and apologetics were appropriate.

Compared to some of the outright heresy I read on Pray Tell and similar blogs, the Capuchin's orthodox commentary is refreshing.

  3. Sortacatholic if you think there is nothing irreverent or profane about this you need a a retreat somewhere where the Blessed Sacarament is treated with due respect.

  4. Bill,

Perhaps the Capuchin could have removed the luna and wore it on his neck, just as the Ritual rubrics direct for the transportation of viaticum. The monstrance without the luna can be transported in briefcase. The monstrance is a sacramental and must be treated respectfully, but is not Our Lord. That is the only error I can find in this Capuchin's practice.

England, like much of the developed world, is post-Christian. A largely uncatechized people will just not go to a full Benediction service. Many will rarely or never set foot in a church. Christ must come to them. So, the uncatechized do not know how to conduct themselves before the Blessed Sacrament? Better that those who have ignored Christ see Him face-to-face and trust in Him again, even if their first steps back to the Church are rude and wobbly. The Good Shepherd laid down his life for each one of those persons kneeling there that day. Would not the angels rejoice if even one of those persons in the square went to the Capuchin for confession and decided to attend Mass again?

I hope these English Capuchins could have a "flash adoration" here in Montreal! Quebec desperately needs re-evangelization.

  5. I was horrified when I first saw this. To think that carrying Our Eucharistic Lord in a holdall is not irreverent is unbelievable. People might thin this is a good gimmick to get people to believe but the non verbal communication sends out a different message. Most of what we communicate is non verbal, that is why the liturgy is not just about speaking words. Take away the sound from this video and what do you see? It can be taken as any street artists performance.

  6. People do not kneel down in adoration for street artists and their performances. St. Clare held the monstrance aloft to drive away hostile forces. These Capuchins brought the monstrance with Our Lord to the shopping precincts where forces hostile and indifferent to Our Lord had to yield place to the King of Kings, Our Living Lord and God, Jesus Christ. While unorthodox, the Lord Jesus Christ did the preaching and those who had ears knelt before him and applauded in praise. Have no fear, little Christians: trust in Jesus.
